Dear Ogden Mayor and City Council:
I am writing this letter in regards to the offensive Dr. John’s Lingerie billboard that I pass when I travel south on I-15, specifically located between 12th street and 21st street. My purpose is to add my voice to the already expressed community concern (ABC 4 News). As a social worker who has had experience working with victims of sexual abuse and with pornography treatment, I consider the billboard to be pornographic in nature and content and in direct opposition to maintaining and creating a safe, moral community.
While pornography runs rampant in our society, I believe that it is the responsibility of citizens and community leaders to safeguard the quality of life and to maintain a decent society. Numerous neighborhoods have also been faced with the dilemma of pornography permeating their community. In District 29, St. George, Utah, a store operator in the local mall was displaying pornographic calendars in a kiosk with explicit nudity featured on the covers. The calendars were in full view and at the eye level of passing children in the mall. Concerns were expressed and the calendars were determined to be in violation of the Utah Indecent Public Display Law by St George City Attorney Shawn Guzman which resulted in the calendars being removed. In February of 2007, Governor Jon M. Huntsman Jr. signed a proclamation affirming his stance against pornography and stated there is “legitimate state interests at stake in stemming the tide of commercialized obscenity, even assuming it is feasible to shield children from this material.”
Ogden City Council members, you have the opportunity to stem the tide of commercialized obscenity. Hundreds of vehicles containing precious cargo, specifically families and children, are exposed to this pornographic billboard on a daily basis. I encourage you to make every feasible effort to remove the Dr. John’s Lingerie billboard from highway I-15 and to ensure public safety, family life, and to maintain a decent society.
I agree that the billboard is explicit and that it should be removed.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the efforts of concerned individuals taking a stand against those blatantly breaking the laws that have been passed.
ReplyDeleteI add my voice to the others that have already been heard and to those yet to be heard that this billboard needs to be removed. I am willing to go to whatever lengths that I need to as a member of the community to protect my family against pornographic material like this.
Please hear the voice of the people and remove this billboard.

ReplyDeleteImages such as these are inappropriate, suggestive, objectifying, sexual and provocative. It introduces values to our children that they are not able to understand and differentiate between. Our society does not need these things.
ReplyDeleteChildren and others struggle to not see the giant billboard. We have the right to not have to see things such as this.
I agree with the previous sentiments. Please remove the billboard, as it is explicit and inappropriate. It has been distracting to drivers, and as such can be deemed dangerous as well. It is possible to advertise the store without using such a blatantly sexual image.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a shame that in the twentieth century women are demeaned and objectified in such a public way and that community leaders would allow it.
ReplyDeleteAs a woman, a member of the community, and a concerned citizen I ask that you remove such an offensive billboard. I feel strongly that it is sending the wrong message to those who drive past it about what the community values and how the community feels about women.
The negative effects of pornography on a community, family, and individual are numerous. It is the responsibility of individuals and community leaders to take a stand concerning their values and decide how far they are willing to allow society to demoralize.
ReplyDeleteThank you for creating this amazing place that we can all become more informed and join together to keep our kids and families whole and healthy!
